I feel great. Number one thing is that the headaches are gone. That, you know, I might get a stress headache, whatever, the normal I might have, but I don’t have the every-single-day headache like I used to have. I would wake up in the morning with a headache. And it’s just not fun to have that every single day. And so, I feel good. I feel more confident. I’m happy to smile now. You know, I’m not hiding, or I’m not, like, shying away from talking to people. I feel more confident talking to people. And I just feel so much better, now that I’ve had all the work done, and it’s changed me.

I haven’t been to an office in a long time. I had early-stage gingivitis. I had a lot of cleanings done, and then after that I had Invisalign done, and then after that, I did KöR teeth whitening as well. But Invisalign uses the clear retainers so that you don’t have to have the look of braces. You know, with braces, you can see the chains and the metal brackets all over your teeth and that’s just not ideal. That’s why I leaned toward Invisalign in the first place because I really didn’t want it to be as noticeable. Mine was really short. I only did it for about half a year, give or take, because my teeth weren’t too crooked or out of shape. I also had a friend who did it for two years. There’s depending on how complex your case is, how long you have to wear it, it’s going to differ.
I did them for about half a year, and at the end, my friend was like… He saw my retainers, my permanent retainers at the end one time, one day. And he was just like, “When did you do Invisalign?” And it was just so funny to me because I was like, “I had it for half a year.” Typically, before you eat a meal you would take out your trays, and then before you put your trays back in, ideally, you would want to brush your teeth, floss. I got into a really good habit actually of flossing and brushing my teeth before I put in my trays, and I was doing it three times a day, sometimes four, if I ate a lot one day. And it actually gave me really good discipline for keeping up with my dental routine because even now I brush my teeth three times a day because I’m just so used to doing it in the morning, and then after I eat at lunch, and then at night.
In a sense, it is a chore, but at the same time, it really did help me with just keeping up with my routine. A lot of people didn’t realize that I got Invisalign. One, because it was such a short period, and two, because my teeth weren’t crazy, crooked or anything, but I noticed it, and I think that’s the biggest thing that matters is that…because you see your own teeth every day, so you’re going to notice the little changes. Even if it shifts just a little bit, I notice it and like-wise for whitening too as well. I mean, other people are probably more likely to notice your teeth are whiter than straighter because I think the straighter thing comes after a long time.
As soon as you walk through the door, you’re immediately greeted by someone with a warm smile. The whole experience with even getting your teeth cleaned, to cosmetic dentistry, to doing something a little bit more invasive is always very friendly. They always take really good care of you. I always leave here feeling confident about my dentist versus most people have bad experiences or they’re afraid to go to the dentist.
I used to be afraid to go to the dentist until I started coming here. I always leave feeling really confident, really heard, really, like, we’re achieving the look I’m trying to get. It’s not common that you can be met with comfort and expertise when it comes to dentistry. And I feel like they do both here really well. Even the small things like getting a cavity filled or, you know, just the general cleanings are all executed with precision, and comfort, and handled with care, for sure.
Peter: So I was aware that I had sleep apnea. I had a sleep study. They said, “Yeah, you got sleep apnea,” and they prescribed the machine. But you don’t imagine every night, going to bed, hooking up to that tube in your nose. I mean, you see those on the commercials, and it’s the truth. And then your wife’s gotta sit there and listen to the machine blowing. And then when you travel, it’s a real hassle.
So, having just sticking a couple of…it’s like mouthguards and I’m very used to it by now. It’s been years. And you just go to bed, you don’t have the tubes, you don’t plug it in, you don’t have to clean the machine. It’s a real benefit to those people that don’t know about it. Just looks like the guys on the football field with a mouthguard. And, I mean, you can close your mouth on it so you don’t really see it, and it keeps your head in a position that you breathe all the time, in just about any position you’re in. So I don’t have to worry about, like she said, laying, so your tubes don’t get pulled out, or your mask doesn’t come off, that sort of thing. So, that’s my greatest benefit here.
Janet: He was up a lot before that. And you’re always having to be positioned so that you’re getting the benefit of that mask, whereas he can roll over and, you know, be comfortable in the position of sleep that he wants to be in, and not be tied down or tethered to a machine.
Peter: Having the hose come off in the middle of the night, or have the mask come off, or have your chin .strap come off. Now it’s …
Janet: And that wakes everybody up.
I neglected oral health for many years based off of, you know, fear of dentistry. That fear sort of led to a shame of all of the compounded issues that were happening, you know, with my dental health. So, I knew that I had to, you know, make a change, take the leap, come here. So, I decided…you know, I chose Oak Park again based on Dr. Jana’s expertise and her passion for dentistry.
Having neglected it for so many years, and knowing that there were, you know, issues happening, over time as those issues compounded into pretty major issues, knowing that I would have to sit in a chair and open my mouth for a dentist to look in, I think that’s where the shame came in was, you know, how did you let it go this long? How did you not fix this? Why is it so bad? And I never, never felt that here at all. I think from the initial consultation, I felt very, very, very comfortable with the whole team here. I was never asked about my past, or the history, or why, you know, my mouth was in the condition that it was in which is very, very, very comforting, and is the reason why I continue, you know, to come back, you know, year after year is just that level of comfort and no sense of shame at all.
I started coming here because I had extensive dental work that needed to be done, and I suffered with TMJ. And just trying to figure out, you know, where do I start with my dental problems was really an issue. So I needed somebody that really specialized in the issues that I was having. So that was in 2012 I believe was the first time that I started to come to see Dr. Jana. At that time in my life, I was going through a divorce, and so I had severe head pain, like a lot of headaches, and I just thought it was stress. Just going through having TMJ, and looking at it now, what I understand about it at the time, I didn’t really realize that that was the problem, but I was having some dental pain as well. And so it all linked together, only to find out that, yeah, I did have TMJ, and I needed to have solutions with that. I was grinding my teeth a lot at night, which was causing just a tremendous amount of damage, but also tension through my head, through my neck, through my shoulders, and it all just affected this whole upper part of my body. And you know, at the time, I thought it was stress, but now looking back on it, it was just, can all be related, or all backtracked to TMJ.
When I came in, along with the TMJ I have, I had a lot of issues, like I needed several root canals. I just had a lot going on with my teeth. And every time I would go to the dentist, every other dentist would make me feel really ashamed of the condition that my teeth were in. So it became to the point where I didn’t really wanna go to the dentist anymore, because it’s embarrassing. And so Dr. Jana was, and all of the staff here, they’ve just been so kind, and never have made me feel like, “Oh, you’re not taking care of yourself.” There were other issues going on, and they took the time to explain that. And when I, you know, when Dr. Jana laid out my plan to begin with, it was overwhelming because I had so many issues that we had to deal with, but she was patient, and basically we drew it out and took it in steps. And I spent a lot of time at Oak Park Dental for the first couple of years that I started coming here. But that’s just because we had to take it, you know, step by step by step. And just the encouragement that all of the staff had towards me and for me during that time, they were, like, my little cheerleaders through that time.
It’s been a few years since I’ve been coming here. I actually started my process through, like, just Google searching dental offices near me in the Madison area, mostly because I lived in Madison. And this one actually had really good reviews. But what really got me was Dr. Jana was doing, like, virtual consults. And so she was offering just, like, a free virtual consult. You submit a picture, you submit a description of what you’re kind of looking to get out of your experience, and I did that. She did respond very quickly, and I really enjoyed, you know, what she had to say and what she kinda had planned out for me.
So that’s when I decided I’m gonna make my first appointment. I made my first appointment, and it was, like, real scary. I actually hadn’t been to a dentist since I was in high school. So after going to college, you’re in the city, you just, you know, do your typical doctor’s appointments or anything. It was probably one of the first adult appointments I’ve ever scheduled for myself. And now, I’m a lot better about, you know, scheduling my own appointments, but that’s kinda how it all started. And initially, I had read the reviews. So, like, after reading all the Google reviews, I already knew that, like, this place has glowing remarks for, you know, having really great staff and everyone here is really nice.
But once I had got here, I was like, wait, everyone really is really nice. Everyone is awesome here. And that’s kind of what kept me coming back. That’s really, it was the people here elected for me, because, like, you can get your teeth cleaned anywhere, but, like, my hygienist, I usually see Danielle right now, and we’re just straight-up vibing all the time. We have a great conversation. She’s usually in my mouth half the time, but, like, when she’s not, like, we have good conversation when I can actually talk.
I’ve been coming to Jana for years now. I had a bad experience with a different dentist who did a poor job on my Invisalign, and I found Jana after I had a bad experience and came here to finish my Invisalign and had, yeah, she did a great job. The last dentist I went to, they said the Invisalign was done as in like the trays were done, they were done with their process and there were still gaps in my teeth and I was not content.
I knew I needed to go find a different dentist to see through that process and as soon as I came to Jana, she immediately saw what they didn’t do correctly and fixed it and went above and beyond to do more than what they had tried to do the last time.
We went through multiple revisions. Jana didn’t think that we were done until it was perfect. I knew I could trust Jana after my Invisalign experience where she pulled it through to completion and made my teeth look dramatically different. And then after my Invisalign, we talked about some cosmetic dentistry where we talked about veneers on my first, my front two teeth and the veneer process with Dr. Jana was amazing.
We kept revising until it was perfect, and we went through multiple revisions on the veneers as well. So I knew that I could trust Jana with her opinion and her vision on the aesthetic of teeth which was beyond what other dentists were willing to accommodate.
Janet: The girls and Dr. Jana, they really do treat you like you’re important. You’re not just a number coming in and out. They call you afterwards to make sure everything’s okay. And their energy and their passion for what they’re doing is a big deal.
Peter: Well, what I think is the equipment, prior to coming here, it was always with a one-dentist person that filled your mouth with tubes and stuff and then asked you how you were doing when you had your mouth full. But the equipment here and what they can do right off the bat, you make a tooth, you don’t have to wait for a crown. You wait weeks, put in temporaries, they just do it, and you got a new tooth on the way out and it’s done. So, I would say along with the people, the equipment, and the facility that they have here is what keeps me coming back. It’s always a good mood. They’re always happy to see you and the people that Jana picks to work on you are very personable and make you feel good. So, yeah, I feel good. I’ve never run outta here going, boy, come back to that.
Janet: Yeah, there’s nobody grumpy here.
After a pretty intensive care plan starting from just having fillings replaced to implants to bridges, and then on to Invisalign really, really helped with just overall oral health, mental health, and just self-esteem. Feeling better about myself being able to smile at company meetings and in public places, and for photographs. From the very beginning, I think the whole team here was very, very clear on what treatment I needed, what the end goal was. There was, you know, a very clear treatment plan that not only was comprehensive with, you know, exact steps throughout the process but also with cost, which was very important. So they were very transparent about how much each phase of my care would cost.
And again, very, very clear with scheduling, what does that look like six months from now, a year from now, two years from now, which was very helpful just to understand the scope of everything that I was having done. I think if you would have asked me three years ago, how I felt about dentistry in general, how I felt about going to the dentist. If I would ever consider myself, you know, excited to come for, you know, a twice-a-year dental cleaning, I would have said absolutely not. And I do find myself now that I’ve gone through everything and I’ve had everything taken care of, I do find myself actually getting excited to come in for the, you know, twice a year cleaning just because I know that I’m gonna be well taken care of. The staff here is extremely friendly, very personable. And again, Dr. Jana’s expertise is unmatched.
Dr. Jana just has a way about her. She’s very kind, very compassionate, and she’s very efficient, which I love. She comes in, talks, and does her thing, but all the while she’s working and keeping things moving, because we’re all busy, right? And so she makes sure that I stay on a time schedule when I’m here, and that I’m, you know, in and out in a decent amount of time.
As far as the rest of the staff at Oak Park Dental, I cannot sing their praises enough. They are just the kindest and most compassionate people. And it’s very difficult to find a staff where, you know, there’s not one bad apple. They’re all great. I haven’t found one person at Oak Park that hasn’t been over the top kind and just a great place to be.
Peter: But I had a machine, a CPAP machine, even though it was portable and had battery power, pulling it out on an airplane and hooking it up to your nose is just not real cool but I did do that. So I was looking for an alternative and I found out that there was such a thing as a appliance for your mouth. And so, I inquired and ultimately it came here. Now, like I said, I can get on an airplane and put the little appliance in, nobody really notices, and gets some sleep.
It’s been better than 10 years that I’m coming here. And the original reason I came was to get a teeth appliance for sleep apnea. And I tried getting that in Janesville and there was nobody there that would do it or could do it. And I read somewhere that it was available here. So I came in and Dr. Jana said, “Yeah, we could do that, but you got to rebuild your mouth first.” So she did, rebuilt it.
That’s been quite a long time, but the sleep apnea appliance works well. And prior to that, when we travelled internationally, I’d take this big old machine, which is kind of embarrassing and also bulky and didn’t work well on an airplane. Now I just put the teeth in, go to sleep, it works well. So I’m really happy with that.
Janet: After Peter came, I started reading up a little bit more about what they had to offer. For years, was a caregiver and kind of let my teeth go because you just concerned yourself with taking care of family. And then I started getting, well, I wanted to do something for me when that was all done. And I tried braces and it couldn’t straighten my teeth. And so, Peter was having a lot of success here. So I thought, well, let’s see what they can do here and I got the veneers and haven’t had to worry about a tooth that crossed over for all of my life since I was little, you know. So it’s been really cool and everybody says, “Look at your teeth, your teeth are beautiful”. They don’t know that they’re veneers and I’m not telling them.
